Good question. I havent seen a good movie in....wow...a long time! I think you know the answer though... ratings...and to give the press something to talk/write about. Plus how would that speech go..."OK sorry, this year we are canceling the Academy Awards due to NO good movies coming out this entire year, better luck next time"

The Academy Awards are big money makers. As long as it is profitable the awards will continue.

There are a few good movies made each year especially international movies, although the Hollywood movies seem to be high on special effects and low on risk taking. The movies typically have a predictable ending and formulaic plot.

If you don't enjoy the standard Hollywood fair, you might enjoy a movie like Pan's Labyrinth (El Laberinto del Fauno), although it is extremely violent.

I didn't watch much of the Oscars last night, since I hadn't seen any of the movies that were nominated for best picture, or in which the best actor/actress nominees were nominated. Sometimes I like the musical nominees, but this year really none of those either. I think it's hit and miss. There have been some great movies made in recent years, but nothing I couldn't wait to see on DVD this year.

I don't know that they don' t make good movies anymore but it seems like giving one away every year is an injustice to some of the winners and losers of the past. Some of the movies that win these days would not even of gotten nominated in other years

The Academy Awards are there to increase the sales and bring a buzz to the movies. Its all about increasing $$, and it works.

It's to put the Oscar curse on major stars. It causes them to go from Oscar to Razzie, generally in less than a year.
