Most Hackers i know, dont give a crap about stealing your banking details or whatever, the main thrill for the REAL Hacker is the hack itself, if your bored enough to try it, you too can be a hacker.... all it is is trying to access something, someone else DOESN'T want you in.....try a bank, DOD, Government Offices etc. nothing really world shattering in these pc's, protected none the less, so the art is to access, poke around, get proof for your mates, and get out again.WITHOUT doing any damage or leaving any trail, this is the ART.
And the hackers that work for MS and other software giants, spend more time trying to break into things than anything else, if the hole is there, exploit it, then make a patch for it, then outside BAD hackers cant use that hole anymore, so GOOD hackers are ACTUALLY helpful too.
Viruses and Trojans, in my opinion are more often than not, made by the Anti Virus companies themselves, to sell more product.
How can a new virus hit the 'net at 3am one morning, then by 5 pm THAT SAME DAY,never more than 2 days, a patch or fix is released ???
Bloody quick decryptors they have......and super intelligent people, these people can unpack a virus, decipher it, read it, see how and what it does, then fix all that in 1 or 2 days...
Something's Rotten in the State of Denmark, i say.

Some do it for kicks

Some do it to gain personally identifiable information so to perform identity theft.

There is a larger group who do it because they are security conscious. Companies like Microsoft would like you to believe that if you use their products, you are safe in all that you do.....but too many times, security holes large enough to drive a truck through are found and because of some serious Public Relations pressure, the security holes are fixed. Windows Vista was touted has the best in security....the hackers found several holes right away and they were fixed....this time, Microsoft invited the hacking.

Because of burglars, you can rest assured that the locks on your door are a relatively difficult barrier. Because of hackers, your presence on the internet is safer.........it is almost a necessary evil.

Many hackers are affiliated with organized crime. Often they will create networks of hacked computers and use them to serve spam. Also personal identification information can be sold for a lot of money.

Also, not all hackers are bad. Some really do just like the thrill of going somewhere they're not supposed to be. It's a challenge.

I think there is a certain group of people who get their jollies and identity from this. They have these things in common: 1) They hate Microsoft and all the money they have made. 2) Their quest is to find weaknesses in Microsoft's operating systems thereby giving them status within their group. 3) They are intelligent - but socially inept and not employable.
Unfortunately, they obviously have not common sense - the user is the one who pays the penalty for all this mischief - not Microsoft.
There are some who say that Microsoft, Symantec, etc. are the ones planting all the viruses to make more money. I am not that skeptical.
One would hope that they would use their skill to get a job or the like - but again they are not employable.

Originally, hackers were simply interested in breaking into systems and poking around to learn how they worked. In general, they were curious but not malicious. That's changed. There are still old-school hackers and ethical hackers around who believe that testing software and looking for flaws and reporting them is a good thing. But there are more malicious ones out there, plus profit has become a major motivation. Organized crime has become involved with the malware industry, and so more people are writing malware for profit and trying to do more damage.

Wow, what a simple question. They sometimes just do it for fun or the challenge. Others, the usual ones, make them to gain administrative access over your computer without you knowing it. Then, they log your keystrokes, scan your hard drive etc. etc. After a little while(sometimes in a matter of minutes) they get VERY personal info such as bank account name, password, account balance, etc. etc. They can even get your home address, name, number, looks*, sound of your voice*, and much much more.

*provided you have a webcam and a mic hooked up.

EDIT- they can do all that without you knowing cuz they browser your computer in the backround and you dont see. Then they can copy files from your hard drive, take screen shots, activate stuff like your webcam and mic and the list goes on. Thats why its VERY important to use spyware protection, virus scanners, etc. etc.

That way they can make big money selling security software. Say no to security software. You'll only be supporting the cause of the problem.
