Ive loved em forever and now that i get the chance to do this work makes me so happy. Yes alot of fire departments here are Volunteer.and there are probably alot more around the country n such that are. and being VOLUNTEER for a job like that. YES Its underpay but we do it because we want to we want to save lives we want to try n prevent someones home or property from being destroyed. Its not that we HAVE to do it.we dont have to do anything. [[and no its not just the suits that people love so much]]

I am proud volunteer firefighter in our community here in the Philippines. Being a firefighter its like being a hero of your time and the altruistic feeling of saving lives and property is nothing compare to the monetary consideration you receive. It is very hearthwarming specially when people cheer you up at the scene and thank you despite the fact that their house was burned. Thats enough reason to keep you going irregardless of the condition and consideration you receive.

We have a small community with a very limited resources (financially) equipment is scarce and a second hand truck, pumps, nozzle and hose. Thanks to some sponsors we bought 5 new suite and 5 new boots but its not enough for 20 volunteers. During the storm last september we had received a second hand chainsaw from Local Government which did all the work and now I think its broke again. Why am I saying this, its because Firefighters must have the will to save lives and property without the influence foreign from their organization. If you are a firefighter put in your mind that there is no YOU but there are OTHERS. The corageous, the brave and the strong its the man in action at all occasion.

Blessed everyone in service and more power!

Firefighters do a good job, and volunteers REALLY do a lot of work that no one else will. That being said, I used to be a volunteer. I stopped after 8 years because it seems like volunteer fire departments attract the craziest people in the world. Eventually, it just gets easier not to deal with some of the insanity that goes on around the firehouse.

EVERYBODY loves firefighters. It's just that simple.
People love firefighters because they went out and got a low paying job that can get them horribly maimed or killed, ON PURPOSE! Just so that they could save lives, and help people.

That's heroic.
Well, and maybe a little crazy too.

Firefighters are like the opposite of cops, who get thier low-paying and dangerous jobs to boost thier ego's and thier feelings of superiority. That's why firefighters and cops rarely get along.

I've know about a dozen firefighters, and they were all good, humble people, who would run into a burning building to save anyone regardless of who they were.

Your avatar wears a firehat, so if youre a firefighter I salute you, even though I don't know you.

They have become tremendously popular since 9/11, but, in reality, they're just people doing a job. The ones in ny on 9/11 were in a national crisis and got plenty of "mass media" attention and praise, so, people got all "hyped" over firemen. Where I live, some are good, and some aren't. And I knew one who was my client who was court ordered to see me because he set an old multi-storied old hotel near downtown on fire, just for the kicks of it. And I know one who appeared to be nothing more than a lazy slob just looking for an easy job in this small town area, so, they're just people, some good, some not. God Bless you.

I can think of few people in the country that I admire more than firefighters. Underpaid. Hard-working. Essential. They are amongst the best and most important people in the job market. I doubt you'll find many people here who are not going to feel the same way. Most people do not think about it much, but when they do, who doesn't think firefighters are awesome!? What else would anyone think?

It is a thankless job just like other professions out there. For example- plumbers, they're underappreciated until they're needed, then they're heroes all of a sudden. Firefighters are more like cops in the way that they're putting themselves in harm's way every time they go out on a call. Firfighters, EMT, cops. All thankless jobs, until people see them in action.

I was going to say that I try not to now that I am a married woman. But I love the guys. I couldn't do what they do, except the 4 days off per week thing. I could do that part.
