it freezes on the screen and i have to hit it a couple of times or unplug it to get it to work again. After I do that then it usually does it again like 30 min later.

If you still have a roller ball one, the ball is probably dirty. If you have a wireless, sounds like the batteries are dying. Either that, or your mouse is too far away from the transmitter.
In any case, you get a decent optical mouse at target for only about $10. There are so cheap now, it's not worth messing with the one you have now. The wireless ones are cool but they burn up batteries, big time. They can also be expensive to buy.
The optical one will probably best fit your purpose. They are real cheap and work great.

Sounds like it is broken, if hitting it will fix it. Buy a new mouse. I recommend getting an optical mouse.

I have had the same thing happen to me a couple of times to.Most of the time is when I'm shutting down alto of thing at a time. What I did, when it was froze. I turn off my PC with my key board.By pressing my ctrl & esc keys at the same time.to see the start menu.First Unpluged the mouse connector. Then useing the arrow key on my keyboard I could turn off my pc by hitting enter key. then I pluged the mouse back in and pushed the power bottun on my pc.

is it a rechargeable mouse? (with the cradle it sits in)

if you don't move the mouse pointer for a while, it goes into a sleep mode to save power, and you have to click on left mouse button to wake it up.

if not rechargeable, it could just be loose connection.

I agree with Amanda. Also if it's a PS2 mouse and you unplug and re-plug it back in while the power is on, you can kill the port on your motherboard.
