I'm going on a 5 hr flight, but first a 3 hr drive to get there, and I'm concerned about my ipod lasting that long. I have the frist nano, which only has up to 8 hrs of battery life. I'm also going to be going on a 20 hr bus ride later, in April, and I'll need to keep my battery running then as well. I went to wal-mart and target and radio shack, and none of those stores had a device that could make my battery last longer. I found one online, but it seemed bulkier and more than I needed. What does everyone else have? Any suggestions? Answering ASAP would be great, I'm leaving soon. Thanks.

I think you need a new battery.

For the car, you should just get a cigarette lighter adapter and leave it there for regular use. A five hour flight won't matter much if your iPod is fully charged when you step out of the car, even with the time spent going through check-in, security, and waiting for the plane to board. The least expensive ones I've found so far are made by Zip-Linq, with their car-only USB adapter pricing at $3, an AC-only USB adapter at $7, and a combo USB adapter at $10. You'll still need to supply a sync cable to hook up to any of these, but they also sell self-retracting versions for $9. Personally, I'd suggest getting the stand-alone AC charger for home-use (if you don't already have one), the stand-alone car charger for use in the car, the sync cable (either use that one or the original Apple cable for home use and keep the other one in the car) and only buy the combo charger if you travel a lot. If you don't have the time to wait for a package to arrive before your flight, Best Buy sells a Dynex car charger with a removable USB sync cable for $15, which is probably the cheapest you're going to find at a brick-n-mortar.

As for the bus trip, your only options would be to tap a laptop computer's battery to charge your iPod when it runs dry (but don't use the laptop for anything else) or get an external battery pack, preferrably one that will take AA or AAA NiMH rechargables (those are the easiest to find and least expensive to buy). Just make sure that you don't waste your money on disposable one-time charger packs.

You need an external battery pack, or a car/plane power adaptor.

Get these, and you'll be set:
- http://www.boxwave.com/products/batteryadapter/index.htm is a battery with a USB hook-up.
- http://www.boxwave.com/products/minisync/minisync-retractable-cable-apple-ipod_cat_l1.htm for a good portable sync cable that works with the other things here
- http://www.boxwave.com/products/versachargerpro/index.htm lets you plug the mini-sync cable into a wall. car, or plane outlet to charge.

The great thing about this set-up is that with a different mini-sync, you can use it with your PDA, phone, and other devices. The components pack neatly in a small travel bag and don't take up a lot of room.
