The Gulfton area was not previously mentioned. It contains many Katrina refugees and is known as the Gulfton Ghetto. It is southwest, not too far from Sharpstown. Yes, there are the ward areas, Acres Homes, and South Wayside, too.

Houston is not zoned, so you can literally have crappy areas next to nice neighborhoods. On the west side, along Briar Forest Road (in between the Beltway and Kirkwood), are a series of old, low rent apartment complexes. You constantly see police cars going in and out of there. North and south of these apartments are nice subdivisions where houses sell in the $200-250K range. I live 3 miles north of there, in Memorial, where you can walk alone at night, houses start at $300K, and the only time I see a cop is when he's writing a traffic ticket to some soccer Mom in an H2.

P.S. I don't know where people are getting this, but there is no Memorial Heights area in Houston. There is Memorial (my area) and The Heights, but they are nowhere near each other. I've seen this twice today from two different posters.

There's alot of ghetto neighborhoods in Texas. Sharpstown area is scarey. There are others but I am fairly new to Houston still, I have only been here for a year and am out in the Kemah Clearlake area and plan on moving over to the Sugarland area in the next month and a half.

if your looking to purchase, anything nice inside the 610 loop is going to be much more expensive than outside the 610 loop.
