Prisioners are there for punishment, There are people out there that deliberately commit crimes to get in jail. It is a free ride for them--get meals, clothes, and bedding, no cost to them and minimal work requirements. They need only bare-bones basic--bed, toilet, sink, bible, 2 changes of clothing, and simple meals. NO air conditoning or TV, or community play time. NO perks given to them from family or earned good behavior. They need to be doing more of the menial labor within the prison walls so taxpayers do not have to pay for outside help. And for those who get released, mandatory pay garnishment from their jobs to repay taxpayer costs for their time in prison.

timujin&jambaby, what would yousuggest ??I bet you also yelled about the treatment of our prisoners in Cuba, who were trying to kill our people, many of these prisoners you are so dead set on punishing more severly are not guilty of any thing other than not having at least $100,000 to buy a good lawyer and was represented by one of our public defenders( public pretenders) who did exactly what the prosecutor wanted him to do , "get the man convicted ) so unless you have at least $100,000 dollars you had better not talk to loud, you may be next with a 98.8 %conviction ratio not many people have a chance in hell , guilty or not, many of thise people in prison are in there for things such as taking a leak in a federal park, or having a open beer, and to many stupid things to mention here , so you or I could be next to sleep on a concrete pad with one blanket, and eat food a self respecting hog wouldn't eat, no medical, one 15 minute phone call per wk, at the cost of $3,25 per, 15 min, we will work at least 8 hours a day in one of their factorys making clothes, furnituer , mattresses, mail bags, or any thing else they can sell on the market and make a bundle for their stock holders , ( some guards, judges, prosecutors, F,B,I, agents or some more high ranking justice officals or should I say injustice officals,) these people have lost their freedom and in so many cases so much more , so before you run your mouth , you should know what you are talking about , even tho you are holier than tho and would never break a law ,yes I almost forgot they do have T,V, one for every 75 inmates so you had better like rap ,it is the only thing on those T,V,s

I believe we are to easy... but the goverment knows say murder is wrong but hey the jail time is not there. I think it depends.
Do you know the case of Liz carrol in the Marcus fizel case...you hear about that?
I think Liz got fair amount 54 years-life for the murder but i think Amy Baker should go to prison too.
But you know life isnt fair and nothing is going to change that.

It depends on what state you live in. Not all prisons are run the same. Criminals are still human beings and still deserve basic human rights. So no, we should not be harder.
And for Temujin: What prison do you know that as Internet access? Please, enlighten me.

Yes. What is to keep a man with nothing from committing a crime? In prison he would be clothed, fed, sheltered, cable TV, Internet... Prisoners should have to work for everything they get from meals to clothes. Then we will see how many will risk committing crimes.
