Have just bought a house on half a hectare (approx 1 1/4 acre with house etc taking up 1/3 of this) and would rather spend money on an animal to keep the grass down than buy a mower.
Out: goats, alpacas.
Must haves:
1. Needs to have a friendly nature and not spook easily. We have children aged 9 and 13 as well as a pet labrador which is about 2/3 average size.
2. Only eats grass and not other plants/ property. Don't want any property vandals due to sheer size or temprement either.
3. Minimal supplimentary feeding - we don't want to be a major contributer to the Co-op owner's Landcruiser.
4. Low maintenance - we don't want to be a major contributer to the Vet's Landcruiser either.
5. Doesn't need a companion (alpacas fret) or if it does what is the 'stocking rate'/hect. or acre.
Preferences (not set in concrete):
1. No hooves.
2. Nibbles the grass off, not rip it out the ground.
3. Doesn't want to escape - saves on installing an electric fence.

Thanks

Here's what you do, you get the local concrete distributor to stop by your house and cover your lawn. That way you don't contribute to the riches of the local co-op owner, it's a one time investment(unless it cracks) and you don't have to spend a dime on feeding some ungrateful animal.
I cannot believe you actually posted this question.

Small Animals That Eat Grass

Well, since you do not want a hooved animal, that pretty much leaves out just about all of the grass eating animals that I know. And I do not think you are going to find what you are looking for with all the other requirements you have. No animal can be guaranteed to eat only grass and not rip it out or escape from a fence. Here is a different suggestion: Since you have the kids (and I am assuming at least 2), why not get them a lawnmower, a rake, and a edge trimmer? This way they can get fresh air, sunshine, and excercise, you get your yard upkeep for free, and you do not contribute to the local Landcrusier club.

hypothetically.. I would think that true.......... free range meat.... would be far better for you than chemically raised meats would be but I would still research the company that raised the meats you might be looking at to purchase. It is not just the free range part that is important. I would also check out their vet services for their animals.. just to be sure they (the meat source) was not given steroids or hormones or antibiotics for health reasons.. If they were given antibiotics, I would want to know what type, and when they were administered. I would also want to know if they ever fed their animals any supplemental foods such as grains etc. and if so what kinds and when, because many feeds that are commercially sold have growth hormones in them. I also do not think it would be a bad idea to check into their calving records to be sure the parents of the meat source were raised free range also.. hypothetically..

no such animal. most have hooves and none just eat grass and thats it. many people would have this magical creature if it did.
minimal feeding
only eats grass
no damage to property
no hooves
doesnt need a fence
no medical attention
your talking about a living cuddly lawnmower wish i had one. you can't have all that in one animal but if you find one let me know!

You are pretty much making it impossible to suggest an animal with all your worries and restrictions. JUST GO OUT AND BUY A LAWN MOVER. In the end it will be much cheaper if you really think about it.

Goats. I had two goats and we didnt need any fence to keep them in the yard....for some reason they stuck around. However the do like to jump on cars.

Another option is donkeys but they will eat everything.
