I'm considering going to Anchorage and Fairbanks - AK for 6-7 days. Questions - How much does it rain around mid April ? Will I be able to see the Aurora in Fairbanks ? If not when should I go ? I intend to go to Fairbanks via rail. Any advice, tips - suggestions welcome....Thanks

Well 50's and 60's in Fairbanks in April will be highly unlikely; more like 30's and maybe 40's. Towards the very end of April we start getting the warmer temps. April is when we hold Arctic Man at Summit Lake Alaska, south of Fairbanks.

Arctic man is a ski/snowmobile race drawing the attention of thousands of folks to the middle of nowhere (or at least close to it). ESPN has been covering the event for the last several years.

As for the aurora, temperature has nothing to do with it. It all has to do with sun spotting and such. Of course it does have to be dark in order to see the aurora. Shouldn't be a problem to see in April.

Rain? I don't think so, probably snow. This winter especially. It has been a very cold, and snow filled winter throughout the interior.

The rail run from Anchorage to Fairbanks tends to be long so bring a good book. Gonna cost ya $137.00 and takes almost 12 hours.
