All the replies to my washboard question mentioned spoons. My granddad said yes, sometimes his band used spoons but only in the key of EPNS. This is obviously a wind-up. I must get him back.

Haven't a clue as to how you might get back at him, but EPNS stands for Electro Plated Nickel Steel. Wish you luck, but I suspect he'll come out ahead.

Sorry, I missed the washboard one - but ask him who Derek Guyler was (think that's the right spelling). He was an actor, but his party piece was playing the washboard. He was a wizard at it.
Ask him if he could play the tea-chest. Serious. A piece of string was tied to the top of a broom handle placed upright on top of an empty tea chest (large plywood box that tea used to come in). The other end was tied to the chest. This was played by putting tension on the string, i.e. leaning the broom handle back, and strummed like a base guitar. Interesting sound used by skiffle groups, but hard to get tea-chests nowadays.
Ask him if went to school by stagecoach, or Methuselah was in his class (supposed to have been the oldest man on earth)
(And the spoons took over from bones, which were got from the butchers, cleaned and shaped - happy days!)

Ok. All the washboards and spoons etc were really household items used by people as instruments, but yes, I have to say I think your grandad is seeing how far he can spin you a tale now.

Why not double bluff and say you can't find anything out about that key, but that in doing your research you didn't know Glenn Miller, whilst being a celebrated trumpet player, was also a virtuoso on the harmonica (I'm fairly sure he wasn't! - but check your facts!), for example. Make it plausible and maybe you'll be able to pull his leg back!

How about getting him some biscuits? Grandads are too clever to out smart (by the time you are a grandad you will know all the tricks too) so buy him some nice biscuits. He may then share some jokes that you might one day play on your own grandchildren.
Or clingfilm over the toilet - it's mean but always works.

Playing spoons is a real art . Hard to do, my Uncle could belt out some great tunes and held everyone spell bond. Lol your grandpa sounds like he has a wonderful sense of humor. He's got me on this one.
