The royal family don't have a surname in the same sense that you or I do when Prince Charles signs something he just writes Charles and the queen signs it Elizabeth R (the R for regina meaning queen)

His surname is not Windsor, that is his mother's name. His father's name is Mountbatten. I understand that Charles uses Mountbatten-Windsor.

If the royals had not changed their names during WWI, he would be Battenburg-Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. He would probably have just stuck with Battenburg.
