Depends on the method (pill, injection, etc.) and brand your doctor prescribed. You should talk to him.

if you start the first day of your period, you're supposed to be protected immediately. if you take it any other day, it gets a little iffy. i've heard you need to wait a week, two weeks, and even a whole month before you're protected. in my opinion the longer you wait, the safer it gets (up to 99%) as long as you take it at the same time every day.

If you start the first day of your period, it's effective immediately. If you follow the instructions for Sunday start, or start any time other than the first day of your period, you need to take seven active (hormone) pills before it becomes effective.

The doctor should have covered that when they prescribed the pills, I believe it's 10 days after starting the first pill, but you better ask the doctor to BE SURE.
