Depends what you're looking for. I'll take a shot based on what you put so far.

If you're looking for something like the city, there's not really anything in the Ft. Worth area like that.

If you're looking for subarbs like Glenview, Glencoe, or Bolingbrook, Downer's Grove or something, then perhaps Grapevine/Colleyville about 15 miles northeast of Ft. Worth.

If you're looking for something more like Rockford, then maybe Granbury, a bit west of Ft. Worth. Nice friendly town.

If you're looking for something in between, then perhaps Mansfield or HEB area.

Now if you want to be closer to the action (Stars, Mavs, Rangers, Cowboys, etc), but still a little outside the city, then Arlington is probably ideal. It's where the Rangers play, and where the Cowboys soon will play!

It was a bit tough w/o knowing what type of environment you were looking for. But I hope that helps!

There are several towns that are nice around fort worth, I live in Arlington.(300,000) We are building a new stadium for the cowboys and the Cotton Bowl will be played there too starting in 2010.But as of right now, there is NO buses or public transportation here. we are located in the center of the Metroplex. You could take I-30 or I- 20 to dallas or ft worth. 360 tx hwy goes North and Southa nd will take you to Bedford, Grapevine, Hurst, Southlake and other small towns. Grapevine and Southlake are good towns too, but lots of traffic in the rush hours.
But beware,, it does get up to the 100s and high humidity(75-95%). We have no state tax anywhere in texas.Weatherford is a nice town about 20 minutes west of ft worth,, worth the drive if you work in ft worth.

My mother just bought a house in Saginaw, Texas. It seems to be a small town, close to Fort worth, and house prices were really reasonable. Crime rate relatively low. It is an older looking town when you first drive into town, looks ran down, but the side she lives on is really nice. I would consider it. Right off of 820, and a hop skip and jump to all the major roads to get around DFW. Even 15 minutes from the Dart Train rail that makes multiple trips from fortworth to dallas and vice versa. The train rail is why she moved there, she works in Downtown Dallas, and gas prices are too high now.

Hello fellow Chicagoan.

I'm currently residing in the North Dallas (Addison) area after my company relocated me here 6 years ago.

Having been from Chicago, I can tell you that you won't miss the weather. As I tell everyone down here, the heat may be uncomfortable, however, the cold in Chicago actually hurts and causes pain. You might break a sweat going from airconditioned place to airconditioned place, however, there's no avoiding the Chicago winters as you are well aware of.

Grapevine is a really great area that's right outside of the DFW airport. Arlington is another really nice area and it's right near the ballpark. You'll find a lot of great areas around Fort Worth as it's a much safer town than Dallas and there's a lot more to do. Although the trendy folks do the Dallas thing, most of the culture that you'll miss moving from Chicago can be found in Fort Worth.

Depending on how far away you want to be, I'm partial to Granbury, TX. It's approximately 30 miles southwest of FW. It's a lovely little town, growing very quickly. Four lane hiway all the way into Fw. Lots of charm on the town square, which draws tourists on the week-ends. Great schools. You can find any type of housing you're looking for, from private gated to historic down-town. You'll be amazed at the cost of living, compared to Chicago areas. Of course there are many more areas, but most are so congested these days. My bet is on Granbury. Built around a lake, lots of golf courses, small town charm. Quick drive to the city.

Some places in Fort Worth are good! But as for "near Fort Worth"... I grew up in Mansfield. It was very safe. Good place to grow up, but I've since moved to Argyle which is about 10 miles outside Denton and 25 miles outside Fort Worth. It is a quiet, safe, and gorgeous place to live. I live in Argyle about 3 nights out of the week and then head to my place in Fort Worth (the Wedgewood community, off 20 and Trail Lake) and if you want to live in the actual city of Fort Worth, wedgewood is a great place!

Arlington is the best place. It is right in the middle of fort worth and dallas.. Everything is there such as Six flags , Texas Rangers Stadium, and the new home of the Dallas Cowboys. . There are so many things to do in Arlington. and it is convieniently centered inthe middle of the metro plex. Its a great place. overall. Seriously
