You don't because they won't. Don't put a plant on top of a betta bowl, it will not help the fish it will only hurt. bettas are meat eaters and will not eat from the roots. Anyone that says they will is simply misinformed.

Bettas do not belong in vases nor should a plant ever be put on top of the container. Bettas are carnivorous. They do not eat the roots like people say. Bettas breath air from the water's surface. Putting a plant on the top blocks the betta from being able to breathe and they suffocate. Bettas belong in a minimum of a 1 gallon container with a heater and a filter. Save the peace lillies for the planter on your table.

Peace Lily or other Spathiphyllum plant. I, however would never recomend them. There a betta killer. The roots don't feed them, so feed them anyway with regular food. Also, the vase is too small for betta fish, they just can't live right inside one!!!

What kind of plant should you put on top of the vase for them to eat? Here's your answer: NONE!!!
Jeez! That is one of the worst set ups for bettas and a lot of people are very against it because it is not a proper set up for a betta. If you want your betta to be healthy and happy you should put him in at least a 2.5 gallon tank with a 25 watt heater.
Also, bettas are carnivores so they need a lot of protein. Bloodworms, brine shrimp and even Hikari's Bio-Gold pellets contain a lot of protein in it. If you plan on giving your betta the pellets, please soak them in conditioned water for 10 minutes before giving it to him. It'll make it easier for him to digest.

Carnivorous, the betta feeds on zooplankton and mosquito and other insect larvae. Domesticated bettas will feed on bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp. Betta pellets are typically a combination of mashed shrimp meal, bloodworms, and various vitamins to enhance color and longevity. For variety and fiber, bettas may also be fed finely chopped vegetables high in protein such as soybeans, green beans, broccoli, corn, or carrots.
Bettas are primarily surface feeders, that is their mouths are upturned, so any food items added should be able to float on the surface of the water.
