The first man-made object to achieve spaceflight was the German V-2 Rocket during test flights in 1942. The next major milestone was the Soviet satellite Sputnik 1 in 1957 which became the first man-made object to orbit the Earth. The first human spaceflight was Vostok 1 on April 12, 1961, aboard which Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin made one orbit around the Earth.

That would be Laika the dog, aboard the Sputnik 2 satellite in November 3, 1957. Ironically, she also became the first casualty of space flight, as the Soviet engineers didn't design the craft to survive reentry.
