My son-in-law just bought a new battery for his truck and he incorrectly installed it. He hooked it up to the wrong post now the truck (F-100 ford 1997) wont do anything. What could have happened?

I just had a customer a couple of months ago do just that. I ended up having to put in a new PCM (engine computer), ignition module, and GEM (body control computer). As well as several fuses.

Well to start off with there are a couple of things that could have happened. First off he could have completely shorted out and fried the battery itself and/or if the truck has a computer in it it might have fried the computer. There is also a chance that the starter or solenoid on the starter could have fried as well. The best thing to do is if the old battery is still somewhat good is to hook it back up and see if the truck starts. I've had that problem once before but luckily for me nothing happened, all I had to do was get another battery and hook it up correctly. Just be sure to thoroughly clean the terminals before installing the new battery.

you may connect it to the battery neg, the reason some do no longer is by the fact as quickly as the different jumper cables are linked, you'll be able to reason a spark connecting the different cable to the different submit. so for protection sake, some connect the constructive cable 1st to the battery and connect the neg cable to any solid sparkling steel spot on the engine, it extremely is the place the different end of the battery unfavorable cable is going besides, so extremely any steel section on the engine or the vehicle itself is like one huge unfavorable battery submit. you may make a spark whilst connecting the neg jumper cable however the spark would be removed from the battery. hydrogen gas emitting from the battery might reason an explosion if ignited by a spark. seen this ensue as quickly as, the battery actually blew up, taking photos battery acid everywhere. i did no longer do it, sorry typing with one hand, the cat is in the different. maximum persons connect the two cables to the battery whilst leaping besides, attempt to no longer create a spark once you do nonetheless, ultimately- in basic terms the final of the 4 jumper cable connections will reason a spark, you already know, 4 connections, 2 on each and each vehicle

If it was run any, the barrery got discharged. Have the battery charged up and try it hooked up correctly this time. If it still does nothing, call a mechanic. Some parts stores will check things out for you to see what is wrong.

He may have damaged his electrical system. Ideally there should be protection against that happening.

All you can do is check the fuses and fusible links. Connect the battery correctly making sure it is fully charged.

Some of the electrics should work, horn, headlights .

you could try google groups rec.auto.tech and ask .

when you hook up a battery backwards the protection device (fuses, relays, ext) sometime do not have time to reacted before damage to components takes place if checking fuses turns up nothing you will need to get a repair shop involved it is possible you shorted out wiring or did damage to the PCM or other components
