First of all bettas will do just fine in either a bowl of 1/2 gallonor larger, or in a tank. You need to decide tht up front and know that in a tank will take much, much less work. If you have abetta in a bowl, you will need to change water far more often.
Feeding the fish is the same either way. Flake food or betta pellets are a good staple, but he should have some extra foods like bloodworms or daphnia every few days. Those can be either frozen or feeze dried and you can get them at any good pet store. Feed him once or twice a day only what he can eat in 2-3 minutes. Be sure not to add too much food, any he doesn't eat will dirty the bowl or tank really fast and cause serious problems for your fish.
OK... in a bowl. If you have a betta in a bowl you need to change all of the water in the bowl every 3-4 days. No putting it off, no waiting for days after, every 3-4 days. You change the water by setting out another bowl of water next to the bettas bowl the night before. Add dechlorinator and allow it to set overnight. Then net your betta out of the first bowl and into the new bowl. Wash out the old one with warm water and a cloth (no soap) and it will be ready for next time.
In a tank you remove about 1/4 of the water each week and replace it with clean, dechlorinated tap water.
That's really the basics and most of the care for a betta, they aren't hard to keep at all.

this is what I did and I'm sure some people are going to say differently but my first beta lived to be 7 years and only died when my little nephew tried to feed it but dropped the bowl on the floor and my second beta lived I believe 5-6 years and only died after I moved out and I guess my mom just didn't have the time to clean the tank etc. My nephew would feed it everyday though!
ANYWAY this is what I use to do!
I would switch the water every few days and scrub the bowl with a toothbrush to get all the gunk off. Then I'd add some PH balancer into the water or the stuff actually made for betas. they NEED water conditioner because of their fins and colour.
I fed them pellets for betas.
betas will ONLY fight other betas or possibly other agressive fish but it's okay to put them with goldfish if you want. My parents have a mix of fish and a beta in there and it's fine and so are the others.
I use to have mine in a beta fish bowl and it was fine!
I hope this helps!

This is how I take care of my Mojo. He is in a 5 gallon tank from walmart, comes with a whisper filter and some food and water conditioner for 35 dollars. He has a heater that stays around 78-82 degrees. They like warm water because they are tropical fish contrary to what pet store people say. He eats every other day and has a VARIETY of food. He has flakes, pellets and blood worms as a snack that he gets a few times a week. They are pretty hardy fish so can stand more mistakes that a saltwater fish or other fresh water fish can. The amonia and nitrite levels should be at 0, Ph of 6-8, best in 7-7..4 or 7.8. He gets a 25% water change a week with a vaccum in the gravel to remove waste and any food I didn't catch with my turkey baster. Any food he doesn't finish after a few minutes I pull out with the turkey baster. I keep a 5 gallon bucket of water by the tank for aval. water changes. If using tap water, it should set out for 24 hrs before going in tank, and you should use water conditioner, I use a water cond. with stress coat to put an aloe coat on his deco. You can also buy Spring water, not drinking or distilled, Spring water. As for his deco he has gravel, soft fake plants, a castle and an Oh Crikey sign! They are pretty easy and fun. Very smart fish.

It needs to be in a fish bowl alone, (you can decorate some), occasionally, like once or twice a day not more than 5 min. each time, and also that's why I say one or two times per day, place a small mirror by the fish bowl, let the betta catch it's reflection, and it will flare. Thinking it see's another betta. Keep the water fresh in the bowl, ask the pet store for how often, and feed a little bit once a day. They like those blood worms as treats too.

Betta's are very easy to take care of. Change the water every week or two (or whenever the water gets cloudy). Feed them two to three pellets twice a day. Keep water between 78 and 82 degrees. Email me at schmitt_caleb@yahoo.com for more info (I've got limited time now).

simple, usually they die pretty quick if you don't know how to take care of them, i feed it beta food about 3 times every week because they don't eat a lot, get rocks for the bottom of the bowl or tank(preferably the color of the fish) so he/she can feel secure that nothings going to get to get to it, don't put a lot of stuff in there with itâº
Hope That helps

The most important thing....don't leave the betta bowl in a cat zone...
One evening, after work...I got home...the betta bowl was on the floor and Mr Betta was no where in sight...
My 2 cats had a big hypocrite smile on their faces...I wasn't smiling.

keep it in a nice bowl/aquarium, i keep mine in a small yet not too small [not the little cups they come in, that isnt fair to them!] they dont need filters or anything they can survive in stagnant water.. feed once a day... change water atleast once or every two weeks.. depending on what it looks like.. [cloudy clean it]
they have their own food its just for Bettas :)
I've had mine since september 06, named him Hubert lol :)
