We always hear how they lived in smoke filled slums and how they worked 16 hours a day for minimal pay.
So why did they move there? Surely the fresh air and stablity of the country was much better.

you said it yourself, the Industrial Revolution - it was a revolution and cottage industries were no longer viable, the cities were where you made more money than you had before, but you couldn't grow yr own any more so more money was needed. etc..Anyway, I digress, remember, revolution and yea, wikipedia will sort you out.

Most people moved to the city during the industrial revolution to earn more money. Country people were poor and couldn't afford to buy much, so some of them moved to work to earn more money. Yes, the work was hard and the hours were long, but people knew it would pay off in the long run. If you think about it today, that people are still doing this. I grew up in the country, and I moved to the city to earn more money. Later I plan on retiring and moving back to the country.

They moved in this poluted Industrial city, simply to provide for their families, of course.....No one, was lazy in those days!!People always moved wherever there was work, to supply means for thier families...And in those days, whether or not the wheather was better in the country, people would have 4-13 kids to feed, and if that meant having to move and reside in the "Big City" than that's what they did, to survive. Very unlike today. People are lazy, and dont do anything & everything to feed thier families, and to provide good morals and so on, anymore... I mean mind you there are still a chosen few millions that do, but the rest just get by, anyway they can, you know. And settle anyway they can, when God has a plan for all of us, and for us all to be "successful" in every aspect of the word. We need more people who are willing to work long hard hours, such as 16 hours a day like these you speak of. BRAVO, to them... We all need to learn a thing or two from this. Thank-You, for a Educational Question such as your's. Smile!!!

because there was better job prospects in the city due to factories and mills. Now the Black Death is another story - people ran to the country when the plague broke out because they were safer there, than the rat infested cities. Hope it helps. If not try wikipedia and type in the industrial revolution. Good Luck.x

well i understand that, but most people were kicked out from their homes in the country and forced to come together and they formed cities. During the industrial revolution there was constant depressions who only benefitted the rich. With these depressions people had and were forced to search for things.the Industrial revolution would exploit them, but they had no other choice for life because the rest of Europe was in constant wars.Hopefully this helps.

I think its because although the money was little it was still money and there were probably many more jobs than in the country. besides the whole issue still rings true today although country life is better most of the jobs are in the city. and even though pay is little people still move there. besides if there arnt jobs in the country there are still costs of living.

I guess they wanted more money. I know the pay was bad but still better than what they made before. They had harder winters back then and I think alot of people found it a struggle to live.

one word: JOBS!

People weren't making money farming like they used to. And if you weren't a big land owner, you had to move where the jobs were! As bad of a job as it may have been, it was a job, none the less!

The farming market wasn't doing so well and people needed money.
