I had the same thing happen to me a few years back and it turned out that it was the coil that had gone.

It would have helped if you had mentioned what type of vehicle you drive, however here are a few suggestions:

Coil
Ignition module
Timing belt/chain

If it's trying to catch when turning over then that means you have fuel flowing so it has to be a spark or timing issue. I would lean more towards spark because more and more vehicles today have higher compression engines and therefore have tighter clearances.

Nowadays on certain vehicles (mostly Japanese models) if the timing belt fails, the valves hit the pistons and that means bye bye to your engine. However, since you can still crank it over, chances are good your timing belt is OK.

Good luck. Hope this helps

Sounds exactly like what happened with one of my Honda's. It stopped on me twice and it ended up being the fuel filter.
Have it checked ASAP because it'll happen again soon if it is the fuel filter

I recently had to purchase a new vehicle due to a similar situation-the timing belt broke!
Not a crisis unless the timing belt messed up a bunch of other stuff when it broke, which mine did!

Good luck!

If its a older ford 1980s I would say it's an electric module normally mounted on the side of the distributor.

you did not say what type of car, but check to see if you are getting a spark to the spark plugs. If not, it could be the control module or also called ignition module. depending on type of car they can be in various places under the hood.

well it depends did it make a popping noise or just stop,if it made a popping noise or if when u turn it over it just spends over a little faster then normal it sounds like it could have jumped time in which u might need a new timing chain or adjust the distributer.has it been running rough or wut if it has been cutting out and sputtering it could be fuel problems but to just stop sounds like timing, could check plugs see if they firing

If electrical stuff works fine, it most likely to be the spark plug got wore out... or bad starter.
