I have a 4 wire heat/cool thermostat that I moved the wire to another room and when I relocated the wires I think the wires touched together as there was a small spark. When I hooked it back up, I can hear the thermostat kick on but the heat nor the air comes on at all. Any suggestions

Checked the wiring....OK no problem here there are 4 wires and all of the positions they go to are marked.
Did something get tripped, and how do I check/reset it?

I have a multimeter, can I use this to check the wiring where it hooks in to the thermostat? What is hot..what is cold and what kind of reading should I be looking for?

Red wire to R screw
White wire to W screw
Green wire to G screw
Yellow or Blue wire to Y screw.
You probably shorted your transformer out by touching 2 of the wires to gather. You can pick up a 40 VA transformer at any electrical supply house.
on the terminal strip in the furnace, you should have 24 vac from the red wire to ground. MAKE SURE THE DOOR SWITCH IS PRESSED IN. Another way to check it to jump across the R screw and the W screw in the furnace. This will cause the burner to ignite. If no ignition, then you smoked the transformer.

Two possibilities.

1. You miswired the thermostat when you relocated it (most likely).

2. The short circuit you noticed was of sufficent duration to ruin the control transformer (not likely).

You need to find the wiring diagram for the thermostat leads. If you still have your owner's manual, it should be in there.

If you can't find it, get the model and serial number from your unit, and do an internet search by brand name. You will most likely find the manual as a pdf download.

make sure the thermostat is level then recheck the wireing. 2 wires are for heating and 2 wires are for cooling. you may have them reversed. look at your furnace controll box and you'll be able to see what color of wires go there then the other 2 colored wires will go to the ac unit.

Im not sure of your answer, but im sure of one thing...There has to be a curcuit breaker or on off switch to shut down power to all your wiring to furnance..If you did touch those wires, your lucky its only the thermostat thats the problem..Becareful..

Check to see if your "small spark" blew out the contol power fuse in the a/c unit.
