I was thinking that I might get a computer with my tax refund, and that instead of getting a second phone line for it, maybe I would look into a wireless connection. Could someone please tell me how it works and how much it would cost?

OK Wireless internet is Amazing. First ovall its fairly simple all you have to do is have a internet connection (non Phone) and buy a wireless router from your local Electronics store Major names consist of D-link, And Linksys. And you simply follow the steps to set up the wireless router (Fairly simple). Then if you have a new laptop there all pretty much equiped with Wireless internet WLAN. So you turn on your laptop. You will see a icon on your tool bar that looks like a computer with a x through it. What you wanna do is Right click it and select "View Wireless Networks" it will pop a window up what you want to do is click refresh on the top left side and then wait a min and it will show a list of the wireless internet signals in your area so then you click your wireless signal. And wait for it to connect then Boom your ready to browse the WWW on your Laptop without wires :P. I love my Laptop and Wireless Connection.

The only extra cost it will cost you is the price of the router and your internet monthly fee (which you already pay right now).

If you have any questions give me a shout livestrong91101@gmail.com

hope this helped

Good luck

First of all, if you have a dial up connection then you can not have a wireless connection.

Secondly, If you purchase broadband services for your home then you can set up what is called a "wireless network" in your house. The next step after purchasing broadband internet is to buy a "wireless router", which you can buy at any local computer store (i.e. Best Buy). And that's all you will need. The wireless router basically looks like a box, and you would just connect the internet cable into the wireless router, and so forth. Just follow the simple instructions that come with the wireless router.

Lastly, If you have a notebook/laptop, then yes you can buy a wireless networking card, then sign up with a cell phone provider like verizion. And you will be able to connect to the internet practically anywhere, even in remote areas, all from your notebook/laptop.

Well I hope this is helpful.

Cheers mate!

Wireless would be a very good option for a laptop.

You will need three things to make it work:

*A high-speed Internet connection such as DSL or cable (sorry but dial-up just doesn't work)
*A modem to connect to your high-speed connection (Don't worry the modem is almost always included free with your high-speed service)
*A wireless router. You can get one of these at any computer store for around $20-$40.

Once you have those three things its fairly simple. Just hook your modem up to whatever line your Internet connection is coming from, hook your router up to your modem, and then configure everything according to the router's manual. Once that's done, just turn on your new laptop, and it should automatically find your router's wireless signal and connect to it.

Depending on your location there may or may not yet be a WiMAX Wireless DSL Internet service provider (if that is what you are looking for). If not you would be limited to the cell phone companies. In our area there are 2 WiMAX providers (listed in the phone book) that provide wireless DSL. One charges $20/month the other is $39/mo.
Neither offers a service when your traveling or out of range (30 miles from their tower).
I like the phone service since it is "almost" national. The actual delivery rate varies greatly by location and unfortunately fees are a little high approx. $50/month.

if you mean wireless using a cell phone provider then that would cost about $60 a month, plus the cost of the card.

The service runs over the cellular towers just like your mobile phone. As long as you have a signal, you have internet service.

Verizon and Sprint both provide this service. The speed is comparable to DSL (1.5Mbps)
