I would like to locate an early childhood friend. This goes back to the period ranging from 1969-1973. I don't even remember her last name. I've used the city directories for the period with limited success (the house they lived in was listed as vacant or the last names listed didn't seem right - they were an immigrant family from easten europe).
Any suggestions for how to proceed would be appreciated. Thanks!

I would try myspace.com people have great success finding people! you can use the search engine to look up members by first name and look at their profile, most have pictures so it should be fairly easy, give it a try what do you have to loose!

If you have the resources hire a private detective. They could probably find them in a day or so.

FIND OUT IF SHE STAYED THERE CHECK WITH THE SCHOOL SHE WOULD HAVE GONE TO IF SHE WERE THERE. I GUESS A YEARBOOK IS OUT OF THE QUESTION BUT HOW ABOUT GROUP PICS? GO TO THE SCHOOL AND SEE IF ANYONE RECOGNIZES HER-THAT WAY YOU'LL GET HER LAST NAME.
