Why is there so much hatred and prejudice towards overweight people?

It's frowned upon to make fun of the anorexics, the bulimiacs, the handicapped, the poor, the mentally disabled, etc., yet some people think it's perfectly acceptable to judge an overweight person. Why is this so acceptable today? Thanks for your answers.

Hmm... good question, not fair and it's a double standard.
On the flip side, should being overweight to the point of endangering your health be "Acceptable"?

Partly because one doesn't understand the fact that if god wanted us to be skinny he would have done just that.
Today they are changing models looks and sizes, this had a lot to do with what we think we should all look like. Dove (like in beauty soap) has a new campaign line out. Ladies of all sizes.
I think it's a start.
Mainly stereo type did this to make us think we should all be thin and part people their self's thinking overweight people just eat all day. 24-07.
Which clearly is not the case for some.
Weather we want to see this are not but this is a form of Bulling.
Over amounts of food can kill BUT so can name calling kill!

Because, in my opinion, the new trend is to be very slim, even skinny and anyone who is not, is looked down on. Everyone else with problems are pitied by the population since "its not their fault". Fat people are looked at as being the cause for the weight, so they are to blame. Its really half and half, some people can sympathize with them, and others cant. Dont even look are Hollywood for answers, because we know how tough it is for them to stick with what is popular to make a buck.

Because being anorexic or diabled is seen by the public as somethingout of your control. Being overweight is seen as someting that people can control.
Not that either of those statements are true. Just the way the public sees things.

I dont think its right to make fun of overweight people. i think a reason people make fum of them because overweight shows a sign of laziness. i know people who dont eat much and are overweight people dont look at them and say hmmm maybe they have a medical condition they just assume that they are lazy. if you go into someones house and its messy odds are you are going to make fun of them because it shows laziness. and if someone is overly thin people also make fun of them because they hardly eat instead of saying maybe this person doesnt eat 24/7 and they like 3 balanced meals. and for the poor probably some people think that poor people are lazy because they arent going to get a job instead of thinking maybe this person needs some mental help. I see a woman where i live and she looks poor well she isnt shes wealthy and she likes looking poor. I think in society if you arent perfect people are going to make fun of you. its mean but its the way things are.

I think it's because people are uncomfortable because they kind of feel that they themsleves could get fat, and are scared. Kind of like homosexuals that are latent, secretly gay, and get really abusive and mean to gay people.

On another note, people see being overweight as weak and glutonous, slovenly, lazy. They don't understand the different physiology of some overweight people.

There are just so many mean people in the world today....sarcastic people. They dont care who they hurt. I think it starts when theyre young, and either they were home alone while their parents worked, therefore they never had any discipline, or they are just like that naturally. Theres more and more people like that anymore though. It really bothers me how people are like this, and I just stay away from them if I can.*
