It depends on the child.
In most cases - nothing except that the child won't be receiving proper nutrition. They are not a baby cow, therefore cow milk is not an appropriate food for them.
In some cases, upset stomach, internal bleeding, constipation, etc.
In other cases - allergic reactions. ANAPHYLACTIC shock. Death. Yes, rare. But not impossible.

Well, thats how it was done 50 years ago when breastfeeding wasn't an option but... when my daughter was 5 months old, I put her on whole milk. I told my ped. about it 3 days later and told me to take her off of it immediately. He said something about babies bleeding internally (very little, but I don't remember why). Also, big reason is because they ill very easily develop allegies. Whole milk don't have all the nutrients a baby needs and the fat content is far too high!

Back before formula, they used to scald cow's milk, remove the skim, then dilute it and sweeten it with karo syrup... It won't harm the baby so long as it's prepared correctly, but it also won't give the baby proper nutrition. I would not give a newborn whole milk that hasn't been scalded and diluted, though... the skim is where the lactic acid builds up when the milk is scalded slightly then cooled... so it makes it possible for the baby to digest.

The Person above is seriously out of date on her info. NEVER NEVER NEVER put Karo syrup in a baby's bottle. An article in last month's Parent's Magazine stated that Corn Syrup and Honey are BOTH dangerous to infants....they can both cause botulism!

They can't digest cow's milk. If you did, try not to do it again. Stick to formula or breast milk for the entire first year and wait till 6mo to start cereals and solids.

You probably shouldn't give them whole milk at birth, but some kids take well to whole milk at 6 or 7 months. I was started on whole milk at 6 months (they started giving me a little bit at 6 months, and by 7 months I was drinking a full bottle of whole milk), and I was a very healthy baby (I was only sick about 3 times as a baby). Ask your doc, but most will tell you that they need to be on formula or breastmilk for a year (which seems like quite a long time to me).
