Where 4 roads or street meant at one point then you have the choice of which way to go ?
That would mean you won't be lonely but it is still your choice to go or not
The crossroads is a point where a choice must be made or a crisis situation or point in time when a critical decision must be made

I think it is where two roads cross over each other. Which way we chose can totally change out life--and awe sum decision.
Of course this is more of a metaphor than a literal cross road. In real life you can turn around and go back but with some decisions they effect the rest of your life. i.e. marriage.

Crossroads are anywhere where (at least) two roads cross.
In mythology, crossroads are where you meet the devil to sell your soul (Johnson/Clapton, For example.) Metaphorically, crossroads are used to mean where two people's lives intertwine or where you make a big change ("take a turn in your life")-including death, BTW.

I believe in mythology the crossroads are Purgatory.
Certainly symbolically speaking, you either take one road or the other. It is a choice which path to take.
Reminiscent of a path divides in a shaded wood. Nevermind.
