This is a question for the ages. Actually, there is a major research project called the "Correlates of War" that tries to find out what things lead to war (or statistically, what types of things are correlated with wars). Wars are not inevitable in the sense that different leaders will react differently to different problems. Not to get too political here, but in 2002 when the Bush Administration felt that war was the only "option" to the so-called weapons of mass destruction of Iraq, many felt that war should have been the last option (what happened to diplomacy?). Today, we see the consequences of that.

War therefore depends on who is in power. Would there have been a war without Hitler? Most likely no. Hitler WAS World War II (at least on the European front). War requires both the capability to wage war, and the interest to do so. A small country with little military capability will not wage war on its own. It may join a larger power as an ally, but that larger power must be the first to strike. Also, different governments will view different problems differently. Is there, for example, enough justification to wage a war because that country's leader gave you the middle finger? Don't laugh. The so-called Trojan War (more a myth really) was waged over one woman. Wars can be waged over just about anything as long as those in power are willing (and unless psychotic, capable) to wage war.

So how to prevent war? Besides removing reasons for war (countries that tend to trade together and have a lot in common culturally tend to not wage wars, and democracies almost never go to war with one another), people should make sure to elect (if elections are possible) leaders that aren't belligerent. Economically, more trade is better. Finaly, governmentally it helps to deal with other democracies. (A caveat: imposing "democracy" because democracies will tend not to go to war with each other is bad, because no democracy that was ever imposed has worked unless the people wanted it, note to Iraq).

Wars occur when one side can benefit from the war. In today's world a world war will force nations to use nuclear weapons that can wipe out the entire mankind. A world war basically will never happen again. Today's wars are usually small regional wars involving hi-tech weapons. Yes, it's human's greedy nature that causes wars. If neither side can gain anything from the outcome of the war, nobody will ever want a war anymore. The US is in Iraq right now, b/c there are oil in that region. Remember how many Native Americans were killed during the century-long war ?

Since society formed yes War is inevitable, the minute that there are two people and scarce resources there will be fighting. It is human nature to get what they need and yes that usually involves fighting. There was awhile ago a anthropologist that tried to tell everyone that there was this village that didn't know war was, well it turned out it was fact the villagers were being paid to act peaceful.

I guess it depends on what you believe. On one side, many scholars believe that all people are born roughly the same, with equal talents, and abilities, and that their upbringing determines how their lives will turn out. If this is true, then giving everyone the same upbringing may lead to an end to conflict of any type.

But, outside of the theoretical, I think all of us know that some people are just born smarter, bigger, stronger, faster, more ambitious, etc, than others. At 5' 9", there was nothing I could have ever done to become an NBA center. At 7' 2", Dikembe Mutumbo had the Georgetown coach begging him to play. If one person is born with an advantage over another person, the first person is likely to be more prosperous, given the same life circumstances. Any difference in the outcome of life will cause a certain amount of jealousy, or resentment. These feelings are the beginnings of conflict. The concepts of greed, and evil, aren't even necessary for wars to start. But they certainly add to the problem.

There is no singular "human nature" which predicts how a person will react in a given situation; all individuals will react individually.

War is only inevitable in the existence of greed, massive ignorance, and blind aggression programmed into the citizenry. If people weren't so damn stupid and hateful, they might be able to get along without having to point tanks and planes at each other every few minutes.

This better be a huge essay because that is an incredibly broad topic.
