I can't pick up a new hobby without thinking that it needs to be perfect right away, and that bothers me. I'll sit there and make mistakes and get so frustrated with myself/belittle myself instead of having fun with whatever it is.

"You live under the delusion that you can fix everything that isn't perfect." TV's Dr. House (Best Character on TV)

I think you have to realize two important facts of life that I live by:

1. Perfection is only real in an abstract sense. It doesn't characterize things in the known world. Looking for perfect hobbies or people or things leads only to disappointment. You will be miserable wishing for things that don't exist.

2. Excellence is not act, its a habit. I think Aristotle said that. Whenever you try to acquire a new skill, you will be bad at it before you are good at it. There is no progress without struggle. You must make mistakes in order to learn the proper way tot do things. You just have to figure out what activities are worth the sacrifice for you, whatever that may be.

And by the way, life is meant to be enjoyed. Loosen up, lower you expectations and live like you mean it.

Everything doesn't have to be perfect. I think it is good to lower the quota in some areas. For example: my bedroom, I always seem to have some clothes to put away. Tonight is a night of vacation, a day to relax after a couple of hours of fresh air. I would reward yourself for striving for excellence by relaxing once and a while.

Because, it is common. Everybody expects themselves to be the best, whatever they do. Most of the time they just feel like this, and when they lose, or do bad, often people fall into a state of depression. Try and remember, there is no such thing as perfect. Just do your best, nobody expects everything from you!

You must be a Virgo... just kidding. Take baby steps at letting perfection go by first doing something for the pleasure of it and not to try and be "perfect". If it isn't fun don't do it.

You have a self-esteem issue. Talking this over with a counselor can help.
