Daylight savings timne was originally implemented in the USA when we had a higher percentge of farmers and part-time farmers. These foks could work a job all day and then go home and work the farm for a few hours before it got dark.
The traditional days to change the clocks were the first wekend in April and the first wekeend in October.
In 2005, the fed governement was feeling pressure becasue of the escalating price of energy- natural gas was skyrocketing and oil was not far behind. They passed the Energy Act of 2005. One provision of the act was to extend daylight savings time as a means to save some relatively small amount of energy. The dates were extended back to march and into novemeber. Instead of 6 months of daylight savings we will have 7- 7-1/2 months (sorry, I dont know the exact dates this year.)
Personally, I love it because it gives me a few more hours to get out in the yard with my kids after work. I'm thinking of going back to the original intent and even planting a garden this year.

Hi. At noon the Sun is at it's highest point in the sky. This is also the midpoint of the day. Before Daylight Savings Time the early morning (let's say 4:00 AM) would be light out but wasted as most of us slept. By moving the clocks ahead an hour we would have an hour less of wasted light. Simple as that.

It used to be the fourth Sunday in October and the first in April. This year that changes, and we'll start daylight savings time on March 11--the second Sunday in March. See link.
A way to remember: Spring forward, fall back (i.e., set your clock ahead in the spring and back in the fall).

It's the second Sunday in March beginning in 2007, and it was the first Sunday in April from 1986 until this year. I don't think that's a different time every year!
