The New Jersey devils transferd.
They are not an expansion team

The team joined the league as the Kansas City Scouts in 1974 before moving to Denver, Colorado after only 2 years. They were the Colorado Rockies until 1982, when they finally moved to East Rutherford, New Jersey and became the New Jersey Devils where they have been ever since.

When the Colorado Rockies and Kansas City Scouts folded, a new owner took over in New Jersey and basically opened the team there in 1981.

It would be the same as asking if the Phoenix Coyotes are an expansion team - offically, they were added to the league, but that is only after the Winnipeg Jets folded and moved there.

The New Jersey Devils were originally a 1974 expansion team from Kansas City called the Mohawks (they were eventually forced to change this to the Scouts because of its similarity to the Chicago Blackhawks).

The Scouts struggled economically, which led them to move to Denver in 1976 as the Colorado Rockies. They played here until 1982 when they made the move to New Jersey and became the Devils in which we know them today.

The other guys have it, Kansas City first, then Colorado, then New Jersey. I'd also like to note this year is the Devils' 25th Anniversary. 1982-2007. I just bought the patch that the players wear, it's awesome.

The team gets thier name from an old tail of a thirteenth child born to a woman(Mrs. deeds) that she had cursed because of her husband. This child was supposed to have been born in New Jersey and looked normal at birth, but soon after turned into a devil and flew up the chimney. It's said that this devil still can be seen in the deep woods from time to time.

They used to be in Kansas City, then Colorado (as the Rockies), then moved to New Jersey in 1982.

They moved from Kansas City. They formerly were the Kansas City Scouts, but Kansas City couldn't support them. Now, Kansas City is trying to steal my Pens and they still won't be able to support a team.

Mitch and Phinny are bang on. Weird they would put a second team in Colorado considering they failed there once but some people are gluttons for punishment. Colorado's gain was Quebec City's loss. Je me soviens les Nordiques.

There are only 6 original NHL teams. All of the rest are expansion teams as far as I am concerned. Go Wings.
