Interpretation of what is right or wrong, moral or immoral, ethical or unethical are commonly based on religious beliefs. If we look primarily at Christian beliefs, since the majority of US politicians are or were Christian. We should feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and help the helpless, so we have welfare, medicaid, Social Security, Medicare, HUD, and many more government programs. Many of our basic laws prohibiting theft and murder are found also in the ten commandments, Thou shalt not kill/steal. A person's faith will inevitably lead them to the "correct" course of action this country should take (atheism is also a faith, a belief in no God, as is agnosticism, a belief that there is no certainty about God)

Government is affected by religion because the people that is in the government are members of religious groups. Thus, in the making, implementation and interpretation of laws, religious beliefs come into play if there is a conflict with religion. Thus, religion affects government in many ways.

The president is meant to be somebody who represents the folk. maximum persons in this u . s . a . are christian so the assumption of nominating an atheist might bypass by contrast. yet as may well be seen having a distinctive faith like Juddism would not disbar you from public provider (Joe Lieberman). maximum politicians do no longer desire the ten commandments in congress, not sure the place you bypass that yet then ten commandments are ethical concepts which just about anybody can consider. So the thought recognizing them is endorsing a faith is misguided. ethical concepts are in many circumstances shared by distinctive faiths or maybe those without it.
