War, a fiction novel about a British tank troop in Germany at the outbreak of WW3 (written in the old soviet days) begins with limited warfare and ends with a nuclear blast. Can anyone help me out with an Author or ISBN? Any old copies out there looking for a reader?

There is nothing in the British Library catalogue with the word 'chieftain' in the title that matches your description. Same for Amazon.

A book which fits the broad plot outline, although the unit is American and using Abrams M1A1 tanks, is Team Yankee by Harold Coyle.
I can highly recommend this as an excellent read in its own right, despite many of the details being obviously now out of date, it still stands as an excellent example of battlefield fiction.

Readily available cheaply as well

I've been working my way through classic literature for years now. This has not, however, prevented me from reading most of Stephen King's books. Some people and critics love to deride him as a pulp writer, but the fact is he has a very engaging style -- and he's one of the best character writers of the 20th century.
