My parents have FINALLy agreed to me getting a hamster...

BUT

since my bat mitzvah is in april they dont want it to be a distraction to me.

then two months after my bat mitzvah i leave for sleepaway camp for 6 weeks.

then i go to Greece for 2 weeks

So i would have to wait until late August to get it because my parents don't know what i would do with it over the summer.

Are my parents right about this?

If not any suggestions on what to do with my hamster 8 weeks??

thanks! all answers appreciated!

Yes, I would have to say your parents are right on this one. You want to show them that you are responsible by caring for an animal, so it wouldn't be very responsible to get a hamster and then leave it for them to tend to while you are away for the summer. I say do some research on where you're going to get the hamster from, and go ahead and buy a cage for it so you have a home ready for it when you return and have something to look forward to after summer break.
Good Luck!

Well, you could ask a friend to look after it. The problem is that your friend might kill it or let it get away; then they would feel bad and you would feel bad.

You could pay a professional petsitter to look after it. They will charge between 10 and 20$ a day.

Or you can agree with your folks and just hold off for a few months. In the mean time, research the breed of hamster you want, what kind of habitat will you put it in, what is the best diet for it, do you want a male or female, how do you tell if it is male or female, what colour do you want, what are you going to name it, what do you have to do to keep it clean, should you use wood shavings or straw, what kind of shavings would you use, and on and on.

When you know the answers to these questions, you will be able to have a pet that you can keep health and happy, and you will be able to spend as much time as you want getting to know him or her without camp and travel getting in the way.

And have FUN! I wish my life were as cool as yours: camp AND Greece... wow!

don't worry it will be something to look forward to, it also gives you time to research the different types of hamsters and how best to care for them, i'm sad when people don't research the pets before they get them, you can make it your little project to find out all you can before you get them and this will also show your parents that you are really serious and how responsible you are
good luck with your bat mitzvah x

Well I have 2 hamsters that I always to be taking care of cuz my kids are always forgetting to take card of them. So yes wait until you get back home especially if you want it to be alive when you come back home. It is nice to play with them at times though :)

unless you can find someone who you can absolutely trust to take care of your hamster than i would wait. we only went away for a week and our hamster wasn't happy at all when we got home and we had someone look after him.

i think they are right if your going to be busy you should wait because hampsters have to be handled all the time or they tend to get mean and then you wouldnt be to happy
