You are correct when you say that technology is at the point where Dr. Strange could be portrayed in a dramatic and satisfying manner.
However, I must add this. The problem with portraying magic is that we have no idea how it ‘really’ works (IF it really works) and so we have no idea of how it really LOOKS. One director’s artistic vision may be vastly different from another’s.
And, generally, whoever does it first sets the standard for the F/X and byplay, etc. This means that the next director, whoever it may be, has a challenge facing him. Even if the second one is closer to the original art, for example, or if the first one threw in a little of his own interpretation of the character and the powers.
Steve Ditko’s surrealistic visions were great, but it is a little difficult to imagine how they might be portrayed on screen. We are asking a director to envision that which is—literally!—unimagineable, and then put it on the screen so that everybody can see it!
As an example of the sort of thing I mean, let’s suppose Doctor Strange casts a spell. Let’s starts him off with the typical weaving-fingers gesture of the sort that Ditko often used, and the gesture that Spider Man popularized when he was triggering his web-shooters (you know the one I mean—the one that looks like ILY in American Sign Language.)
Now we have to decide what kind of special effects to use. For movie purposes, even if Doc used different F/X for different spells, they will want to give him one single effect that he uses most of the time, as a visual identifier. This is to help the audience tell him from the bad guys in the fast-paced actions scenes.
Oh, sure, you’re saying “We wouldn’t get him mixed up with Mordo, or whoever!” but the director doesn’t know that! He’s thinking, “We’ve got to make this character distinctive to millions of people who have never seen or heard of him before!” because that’s the way they think. They want to displace Spider Man and Fantastic Four in the public eye with Doc Strange.
So, to wrap up this very simple example, if the director decides to use a stream of bubbles as Strange’s main F/X, Strange is going to be sort of typecast with that. Even though under other circumstances he may have used projecting rays of colored light, or a jagged arc of lightning-like energy, or even no F/X at all depending on the spell and the circumstance. (A movie would NEVER us no F/X, even if the original storyline called for it. You see the problem?)
Doctor Strange is a great character, I just don’t think that the movie medium is sufficiently familiar for him, yet. I think he needs to appear as a supporting character in a Spider Man or Fantastic Four film, and then branch out to star in a film of his own. Hey—how would this be…? I know that Daredevil and Elektra were dogs, as movies. But there is a small yet vocal minority clamoring for their return. DD and DS were practically neighbors, since they were in the same run down part of NYC. It’s just that their specialties took them in different directions so they rarely if ever co-starred. Maybe what we need is a Marvel Two-in-One…?
Having said all this, I would like to plug for another hero—Green Lantern. The technology is there for holograms and such, and the green energy format is solidly established. It is more clearly defined than magic, and almost as flexible. I think that with a minor degree of adaptation, the Green Lantern Corps could easily be made into a movie setting.
Your question is a great one. Keep on asking!

you know with 'superman returns' and 'spiderman' out there, this is quite a tough question.
now that 'ghost rider' is also promising and not to mention that 'fantastic four' really knocked it, I'd say that looking for the potential best has to be original and really cutting edge.
here are some of the series that I'd like to see in film:
the SAVAGE DRAGON, this is one cool dude with a good sidekick, action sequences would really rock hard
BACKLASH - i can't imagine how they would do this actually
the TRENCHER, the uniqe artwork strikes me odd on how it is possible to present in film
WITCH BLADE , I'd like to see her, she's one unique female metamorph
do you remember the WARLORD? although the series wasn't that popular, i think the sci-fantasy would really click it, its like achilles meets luke skywalker
and of course one of my most favorite villain
LOBO, he's is my favorite anti-superman, a film about this bad *** dude i think will re-set the trend in comic book films
