My roommate of the last 8 months if from Egypt, here on a student visa. He has talked about becoming a citizen and he likes a girl here. If he were to marry her, how long would it be before he got a green card? And how long would he have to remain married to her?

I don't think it's instant.. I've heard of ppl having to "prove" how they met so that immigration doesn't think it's just for citizenship.

He's here getting his MBA, but it could take up to 3 more years. On a student visa he is not allowed to work, so he has to live off what his dad gives him.

I have a friend. Australian. She's been married to a US citizen for 20 years, had a green card for 20 years, only occasionally gone back to Australia for vacation. Marriage is ending. She wants to go back to Australia and spend a few years there. She claims to have an indefinite Green Card because she has a US spouse. I thought all Green Cards only had 10 year spans now. Are the older ones still un-ending? Is there something she should do to check on her Green Card status?
And if she leaves for a few years, that's bad, right? You're supposed to maintain a US residence, stay in the US 6 months out of 12, and 30 out of 60 months. Are they the right numbers? Are long term spouse based Green Cards exempt from these rules?

A marriage jsut to get your papers is never a good idea because there are so many ways for them to find out that it is fake, you will not believe! But in general, once you get married you dont automatically get a green card or become a legal citizen, it buys you some time to file the right paperwork to get to the point hwere you can apply for a green card. So there are petitions that the us citizen has to file to tell teh government that this is her husband and she wants him to live here with her and be a citizen. Then it can take anywhere from 6 months to 6 years for it to be approved so dont get in a rush to choose marriage because marriage itself is a tough game even if you are only in it for one reason!

Plastic Trees ... It's got nothing to do with how long they're married. There's a residency requirement. In this case, residency begins when he's granted his permanent residence status and NOT when he arrived on his student visa.
If he's married to a U.S. citizen, the residency requirement is three years. If he's not married to a U.S. citizen, the residency requirement is five years. However, I must emphasize, the length of time they've been married is not relevant at all. The residency clock begins to click when he's granted his permanent residence status.

The best and safest way to find out is through the Immigartion and Naturalization department. Then you'll get all the facts as they require. I find it rather disgusting for people to marry for those reasons. The marriages rarely last. He should really go home and apply the right way.

It doesn't work that way. An illegal immigrant can't get a spousal visa. It isn't a magic wand to make illegals, legal. They'd need to return to their home country and come back legally.

He should get his drivers license and then get his bride on welfare. Then he can do whatever he wants.
