it's 1280 x 1024 for the most regular monitors and 1440 x 900 for the wide screen ones. The standard resolution of HDTV is 1280 x 720 progressive or 1920 x 1080 interlaced. All computer monitors are capable of displaying HD video.

the best resoultion for a monitor is dependent on if it lcd, or crt. lcds come with their optimal resolution.

generally i set it as high as my video card can go unless i cant read it or am uncomfortable with the settings.
