Hi Jake,
You might have spy ware. That is usually the cause for slowdown of computers.
You should have three anti spy ware programs.
Windows Defender is free from Microsoft. Go here to read about and get it - http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
Spybot and AdAware scan for and remove spyware. Run them both about once a week. Get them both free here - http://www.download.com
I think there is an excellent chance that will cure your problem.

These are my answers. If your hard drive is full, then your pc will be slow. If your pc lack memory, your pc will be slow... If your computer is infected with viruses or spywares, your computer will be slow...
If you can, upgrade to 1GB of RAM and invest into a larger hard drive... If you think you have enough memory and space on your hard drive, reinstall the OS to remove all viruses and spywares, then reinstall all the required drivers back onto your computer... Take care now.

What sort of sites have you been visiting? Some sites deposit "spy ware" on your computer and cause it to slow waaay down. A good remedy for this is SpySweeper. It goes through and removes any spyware. Also, try defragmenting your computer.
For Windows I'm assuming:
Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmenter

you may have spyware or any number of internet nasties. if you do not have a spyware program ie. ad-aware or other options then you are open to this attacks.
you could also have a virus, if you do not have a virus protection program you may want download one. if you already have one make sure your definitions are up to date.
lastly you may need to defrag your hard drive. right click you drive> properties> defrag. when you run this make sure you can let it run for a bit. since this will take longer for you.

It could be a number of reasons. Older machine with slower processor, not enough RAM, virus, trojan, spyware, malware, too many programs running in the background.
