It is commonly acknowledged that "transparency" is an important part of any democractic government. Transparency means that the average citizen has access not only to public records, but to the meetings, events, parliaments themselves. For example, any citizen can sit in on a city council meeting, congressional meeting, etc. Public trials are the same idea... they're public so that the general public can see that the trial is just and fair.
