Looking out a few years, how would you back-fill the catcher and first base position if you were the Detroit Tiger front office?

At least the Tigers have another year out of Rodriguez and Casey but it is not to early to look to the future. Under Dombrowski, the Tigers have been able to put together not only a respectable farm systems but one of the best. One respondent indicated looking to Shelton if and when Casey is gone and that is certainly a possibility. Shelton has proved he can play but he needs to be more consistent. Catcher is certainly one of the positions on the field where it is a little more crucial to have veteran leadership on the field. If the Tigers do need to go into free agency or by way of trade, there are many who would want to play for a winner.

Well, we have Casey for this year. Chris Shelton will start the season in Toledo (to try to get his head out of his you know what).

Shelton is The Tigers future at 1st base. Big Red is a great guy, but he needs to get his swing back.

The Tigers have an option year on Pudge for 2008, and probably will pick it up (seeing as how that is one area The Tigers are seriously hurting down on the farm).
And yes, Vance Wilson is still our back-up catcher.

Pudge is only 35, and in the best shape of his life. I'd love to see him end his playing career in the old english "D".

Looks like they are set through 2008, after that we'll just have to wait and see. I am sure Dombrowski will come up with something; he always does.

EDIT:

GARY SHEFFIELD WILL NEVER, NOT EVEN FOR 1/2 INNING, NOT EVEN FOR ONE OUT, NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER PLAY 1ST BASE. IN CASE I DID NOT MAKE MYSELF CLEAR I WILL SAY AGAIN:

GARY SHEFFILED WILL NOT PLAY 1ST BASE!

Sheffield played a bit of 1B for the Yankees last year. I did not know that Vance Wilson left the team. He is a great backup. Pudge played first a few times last year as well. I saw the first time, in Baltimore last summer.

Avoid anyone who is over the age of 28 or has a history of being a money mercenary.
Tigers are looking good, so would go young talent for these positions.

How about signing another catcher who lost an amazing amount of weight once he stopped using steroids. Guess who did that one already! Pudge ain't so pudgy anymore, wonder why.
