Know and love yourself. Be your own best friend. You can never possibly be as happy if you're not true to yourself and the people around you.

this really depends.. mostly on the type of people you are talking about. when my parents approve of me, or my teachers, this makes me feel good. earning respect from people that mean a lot to you is the most gratifying. Personally I used to have a lot of old friends that liked to drink and party non-stop, and in order to get their approval you had to make sacrifices of your own judgement and personality. So, basing your behavior on others' approval is not necessarily a bad thing, only when in the wrong crowd. Decide who you want to be, and stick to the people who most closely resemble this. Birds of a feather flock together. Once you start earning approval and respect from your family, close friends and teachers (either a school or ppl who you go to for advice), then becoming independent and self-fulfilling will come naturally.

Learn to love yourself, even the things about yourself you may consider weird or not normal. I think most people have a sense that they are different to others in a way, maybe you feel geeky or less intelligent or perhaps you are just a bit eccentric. I think the most important thing is to be able to say "This is me, if you don't like it , you can lump it!" The people who you really need around you will either stick around or new people will be drawn to you but anybody who is not a true friend may not stay around but you don't need them anyway. You only have one life, you need to be true to yourself, don't put on an act.

We all do this to some extent. Still, sometimes you have to break the mould and stand up for yourself, so I can see where you're coming from. It depends on whom you're trying to keep happy however. As long as its worth it, and you love 'em...

It impossible not to. If someone is having a bad day, it'll take some serious will power to ignore them and not seem irriated or arrogant. We're human, not robotic.
