I grew up in a house where the only form of heating was a coal fire. Although it was only small, we all used to sit round it at night, with the light off, listening to the radio (no tv!).
But we sat for hours looking at the 'pictures' the flames made, and we gained a strong sense of security from it.
I would definitely say it was romantic.
The only down side was cleaning and setting the fire the next day - my job as the eldest. And getting more coal in from outside on a winter's night - but that only meant you enjoyed the fire even more.

As long as it is in control, yes; and (again, in control) the bigger, the better.

There is something primevil about a fire that everyone can appreciate. A fire will inspire a moment of awe on anyone.

This can be best observed in a camping situation; particularly a somewhat stressful situation such as a group of relative strangers.

Given a nice open fire on a quiet evening, you will find that people become fast friends and everyone has a story to tell fireside.

Most definitely! One of my best experience w/ a female was in front of a roaring fire. It was Chilly and the warmth from the fire felt great. Kinda like putting on clothes fresh out the dryer in the winter time. Plus the lighting is spectacular. Mysterious and romantic.

Yes - Definately, However a word of caution, it doesn't if a poorly placed log rolls out of the hearth and sets fire to a carelessly discarded pair of tights!!! - As once happened to me!!!

I don't claim to understand, but it absolutely does. My wife LOVES when we have a fire going in our wood stove. (To me it is just a pain in the ***, but it gets her in the mood...)

Absolutely. It gives off great light, creating interesting shadows. It also gives off heat, which creates sweat. Better to slip and slide. It also gives off a great smell if you burn the right wood.
