Shipping prices are so high it is hardly worth shipping packages. But with e-commerce buying items forces us to pay these prices too. Maybe we need more competition?
I have tried USPS, UPS and Fed X all being about the same.
What is everyone else doing?

You aren't the only one to notice the insane prices.

There are some local shippers that are still cheap to use. This is no good if you are shipping global or out of their area. Check your yellow pages under shipping. I live in the Midwest and have used Speedy. They only cover a few states but most shipments are made next day and price is much less the UPS standard rate. If I am buying or selling in their delivery area then it's a great deal.

If your business buys or sells mostly in a certain area then check around for a local delivery service. Otherwise you will have to pay a small fortune like everyone else.

Nevada,
I understand your frustration. However, seeing as how I am in the shipping industry let me explain some business principles that may help you. All of these shipping outfits are consumers of fuel, No great revelation there but there is a way it affects prices. Since most of these companies are publicly traded they have a responsibility to share holders. Rough translation, if you pay more for fuel so do they it just shows up in the total cost.Companies with share holders have a target profit margin to maintain to ensure profits are proportionate. It is a cruel fact of business but if you were a stock holder expecting a dividend check you would understand. By the way , don't blame oil companies for this since on an average they only make 7 cents a gallon after all there costs are tallied. However, the government makes 60 cents a gallon for taxes. Study the definitions of profit and profit margin and this should help you since more competitors would have the same expenses.
