Hello Kate. This is the golden question everyone asks. I live in London where there appears to be more web designers than company's so competition is very fierce. We use Google AdWords, leaflets through business doors, letters, cold calling by telephone, word of mouth and sometimes networking through small business clubs. None of these need to be expensive, and if you sling enough mud something will stick! I started 9 years ago by printing leaflets on a black and white photocopier, 2 per page. The cost was about 2 pence per leaflet and you may need to post 1000 before you get a call. To make more money out of your work you will need to approach larger companies like single car dealerships etc but with a stunning portfolio and not a leaflet.

Try advertising. There are many venues for advertising, but that is the traditional way of getting business. Encourage word of mouth advertising. Spend some money on ads. Use newspapers. Target your audience. Maybe an Internet ad would be better to get your audience. I know money is tight; BUT the business that cuts advertising is looking at failure.
