I'd wear very dark brown, black or cordovan (a purply-brown). Just make sure that they are not too dull-toned, like nubuck. They should be shiny, but not patent-leather. A pair of dark-toned wingtips would work great--regardless of the color. No shoestrings, either-- tied shoes have a tendency to either look less dressy or too formal with a dark suit. My father has always been a very good dresser, and I actually asked him what shoes to wear with my "interview suit" when I graduated from college. I am female, but I had a tradtionally-cut navy pantsuit. This was the advice he gave me, and he actually took me shopping for my shoes. I ended up with a pair of black-brown dress pumps that had an alligator-pattern in the leather. Very nice!

Navy suits with Dark brown shoes, belt, leather watch band and other accessories.
However, I prefer Cordovan ( Maroon) for a classier look with tasels on the shoes. Like the "Penny-loafers" color. With belt and Briefcase to match, You can use BLACK with it as well. Bring the maroon color through by adding any color, jewel tone with it from the colored shirts and striped ties. You can wear more fun man colors in the market place now.
LIghter color Blue you can wear black shoes, yet its not recommended.
Also, get some "man grooming" done. Wax those scary brows, let a REAL barber teach you how to shave and do hair removal of ears and nose (lucky guys) and get a manicure and pedicure.
Men need a monthly manicure to look their best, go on tuesdays or wednesdays that is the slowest day. Get your nails, cut short and BUFFED to shiny. It looks natural and healthy.
Those shoes can carry a classier "casual" Friday with a polo shirt and jeans.

I always thought the rule of thumb was black... Or if you are wearing a multi -toned shirt or tie that will work with a shoe that is not black...you could pull it off. I am not sure where the brown would fit in... .lol

Black comes to mind first, or cream colored, or navy blue. Try light blue in you are adventurous and the shoes are high quality.

I think that you should probably listen to the woman at your work. Though you can wear black, I suggest the brown because, even if it doesn't look good to you, it probably will to everyone else. You can go with your gut too if you want, though, because black matches with anything, and it's nt like its unnacceptable to wear black wiith blue!
