I have just fitted a new 400gb hard disk and i downloaded the sata driver from motherboard website and pressed f6 only to find that the setup could only see 133 gb of my drive .
is there any way i can get windows to seet the remainder of the drive without re-installing everything?

consider yourself Lucky for formatting only 133 out of the 400GB so that way you can create a different partition(DRIVE) from the control panel in windows XP just go to the following website below and see for yourself!

Use software called partition magic and re size the partition make it 400 GB.
