My husband has had 2 lower spinal fusions as a result of car accident. He is now 55 and wants to sea kayak. He is reasonably fit. My question is - is moderate sea kayaking and the spinal rotation required bad for his back? Or should be just LEARN how to kayak responsibly? In other words, is this even a sport he can contemplate. Any experience out there?

kayaking requires a very supple spine...because you are twisting and turning while balancing the paddle.
also you have to be in very very good shape to do rolls with the kayak, when it goes over..otherwise it's hard to get out of a kayak when it has turned over and you can't roll it back upright.
that can be very dangerous.
perhaps if he loves the water so much, sailboating would be a bit safer and not as strenuous.

You need to consult with his dr and see what he or she says.
