don't listen to those people lol. I've had my snake for... 5 years now and I've only been bit once. they'll only bite if their hungry or you irritate/harm them otherwise they're just snakes that need an attitude adjustment lol. milk and corn snakes are great! you could google: small snakes or something

My sons' have both.. Corn and Milk snakes as well as three king snakes.. I'd go with the Corn or Milk snakes. Our corn snakes are now over 4' long.

I got my daughter her first and only snake last year and it's a lavender California king snake. He has yellow and lavender bands. He's really great and easy to handle. She walks around the house with it around her neck. I'm not real partial to snakes, but I really like this one. They grow to be about 3 1/2 - 5 feet long. Hers is already 30" and sheds about every 5-6 weeks right now. Hers has bit but it was hungry and thought her pinkie was a pinkie to eat. We feed frozen fuzzies now, about 6 per week. Right now we keep him in a 10 gallon tank with locking lid.

Garter snakes are very easily tamed and are fun to watch. They stay relatively small and will never get large enough to endanger a small dog or neighbor's cat.

I think it is a wonderful ideal. My husband and I have 37 snakes. Ranging from cornsnakes to a reticulated python. Definitely get a cornsnake first. Milksnakes are usually nasty. I also started out with a cornsnake. My husband started out with a ball python. Ball pythons are also a nice snake to start out with, they aren't as jittery as cornsnakes, but require more attention to humidty.
