Do you think other states will follow? What does this mean for African Americans in the United States? What does this say about our government? Why did this take so long? Was an apology needed?

As a white person, I say that yes a formal apology was needed. It's too bad that it took so long. By the way, I am a Virginian too.

If we could put titles in our answers, I'd start mine with "As a black person..." but we can't, so I'll put it here.

What I don't understand is why they're bothering to apologize. The current government in Virginia didn't enslave anyone. An apology itself is just an acknowledgement of wrongdoing, something that had already happened several times in history. The majority of the people in the US acknowledge that slavery was wrong and that it still affects racial relations today. The people that don't feel that way are constantly verbally abused by the majority who do feel that way.

Honestly, the apology was useless. But that's just me. I'm sure someone is running around talking about how they managed to get the best of people that weren't even involved in the original situation. It would have made more sense if they apologized for sustaining an environment where discrimination exists.

They shouldn't apologize. I mean, no african american alive today was a slave so I don't see why they have to apologize. Slavery is a way a life. It has been happening since the beginning of time and still goes on to this day. You don't see any other country apologizing for what happened hundreds or thousands of years ago.

Well, even if they didn't it shouldn't be a problem. Our White Americans who are here today weren't around when Slavery existed, and slavery has never been reinforced, so I wouldn't look at anyone White person today and bash them for something that happend centuries ago. Black people today weren't even there. Yet many feel the need to always make a statement on slavery these days when it doesn't exist anymore.

I think that it is long over due. Its to the point that it dose not mean anything now. Wow who cares that said sorry. That cant bring back the people that was lynched, hung, stabbed to death, burned to death, or even gunned down. It makes me sick to my stomach that it was even done they should of just left well enough alone. I don't care what is said or done there will always be those who think that the black culture is not good enough. And the thing about it is that we cant blame all the whites we also have to blame ourselves cause we put our self's in this predicament. We allow our self's to be put down and ran over and its time the we as a black nation stand up be proud of what and who we are. As for the government the will never be behind us but yet they come to us when in need of an informant or to buy drugs but then where do you think the black race get there drugs from straight from the white man. So i can care less about anyone saying sorry I was not there and it didn't hurt me any but i still feel for the people who had to suffer.

I hope some African Americans answer this. It's kind of hard for a white person, like myself, to know what the importance of this is.

I thought Virginia was a red state? Slavery is endorsed by the Bible, both the Old and New Testament. To apologize for it is to slap God in the face.

Stupidity. Who are they apologizing to?? There are no former slaves alive. No other states need to follow threw. My family didn't get here until the 30's. I have ZREO guilt. and no, it was NOT needed. GET over it, get off welfare, and get to work!
