I am in a community theatre group, and we are seeking funds and grants for a new facility. I know of a "civic" theatre in our area that gets a great many grants. We are a "community" theatre, and there seems to be a difference, but I don't know what it is. Can anyone tell me?

I would have said there is no difference.

It may be that the civic theatre has some official recognition by or connection local government. It would be worth investigating that.

In terms of grants, you will need to be formally incorporated, with a working board of directors. In these days, most granting agencies won't deal with informal groups.
