Some Japanese, I dont know if its only them, but I've seen movies and some plays where Japanese women in their Kimonos will take these baby steps when walking? What is the reason for that? Is it more feminine to their culture to walk like that? I was told that, when they are young, they get their feet crushed, to keep them small, but I dont believe that..Do you know the reason?

Example: In Memoirs of a Geisha, the women walk this way

Contemporary Japanese women no longer walk this way (except for Geishas, who still do exist). Geishas walked that way because they were always supposed to be demure and ladylike, they were actually "trained" on how to walk. I also think that the kimono and sandals they wore restricted their movement. Their way of life is considered an art even today. Foot binding is actually a Chinese custom that luckily is rarely done anymore (I think it was banned).

This is simply because the kimono are wrapped around so tight, that the women have no choice. The most expensive kimono are 12 layers thick, so it is simply physically impossible to take long steps when wearing a kimono. You will also notice that you never see Japanese women in movies bending over at the waist. This is also because they can't. If a woman in a kimono drops something, she has to kneel down, pick it up, then stand up again.

So, you can see why Japanese women nowadays only wear them on New Year's Day, at their own wedding ceremony, on All Adult's Day (成人の日), or at funerals.

Google "foot binding" and you will find loads of info. This is a practice that wealthy Chinese women did until it was outlawed in the early 20th century. Around 5 or 6 years old, they would bind their toes (except the big one) under their feet so they would eventually break. Small feet were considered beautiful. If you want a good historical fiction novel re. this, try "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan."

That was traditional Japanese. Many Asian cultures including Chinese felt (still feel) petite features particularly feet are more feminine. They had girls feet bound (wrapped tightly) so that they wouldn't grow to large. It was a really painful practice. Contemporary Asian societies don't condone these practices and most would say if Japanese women appear to be walking like penguins the reason is you need new glasses, contacts, etc.

man i think the problen is not with their style but the problem is with your viewing style as they say the true beauty of a substance lies in the eyes of its beholder the technical point is that they have small and flat feet

i was going to say that maybe it has something to do with the shoes they are wearing considering that they are flat. Or maybe the clothes they are wearing do not allow them to walk like we are accustomed to seeing others walking
