I bought my 82 FXB Sturgis used (500 miles) in 1982. I have always been told it was an extremely rare bike due to its reddish/maroon factory paint scheme. I've tried emailing harley and never got a response. Does any one know the answers?

Couldn't find Sturgis, but here's the total.

AMF had to some extent attempted to compete head-on with Japan rather than concentrating on the more specialized market that Harley suited best. Production figures for 1982 offer some measure of the hopelessness of such a strategy: Honda built more than 3.5 million bikes in the year; Harley built less than 50 thousand.

The situation was desperate. Just six short years after 1973, Harley's share of the rapidly growing American big-bike market had plunged from almost 100 per cent to less than 40 per cent.

Production in the United States plummeted from 75,000 motorcycles in 1975 to 41,000 in 1981.
